Cozy Reading Fabric

I designed this fabric for a Spoonflower Design Challenge and while my design didn’t win, I had a lot of fun designing it. The brief was all things cozy, warm, and books of course. My initial thoughts after learning the brief were candles, blankets and a fire place, however that didn’t seem like the aesthetics I wanted to go for. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of a chilled out day, sitting in the sunshine that streams through the window of a girls share house with a good book and endless cups of tea. Sounds heavenly doesn’t it! I love interiors, in fact I started studying interior design before I realised that I wanted to be a textile designer, so I had a lot of fun with this print. Drawing the rattan furniture, filling the house with colourful rugs and cushions and of course an abundance of house plants was so fun and made me wish that my house looked like this!

You can purchase this design printed on a variety of different fabrics and wallpaper through Spoonflower. There is 20 different options of fabric so you can literally make anything with this design. A dress, t-shirt, jeans, activewear, cushion, tote bag… the options are endless.

Here’s something I made from the Cozy Reading Fabric. I had this fabric printed locally on cotton lawn (a thin, lightweight cotton) and used it to make a Peplum Top. This is a free sewing pattern that is made by In The Folds in Collaboration with Peppermint Magazine. You can find it here plus a bunch of other free sewing patterns. I actually can’t believe its a free pattern, it’s a really good quality beginner pattern and the instructions are very clear.

If you want to make this top with the Cozy Reading fabric from Spoonflower, I recommend the Cotton Poplin as it is lightweight and will sit really beautifully, or the Organic Cotton Sateen which feels a bit dressier due to the slight sheen. If you do go for the Cotton Poplin just remember to order a little extra than is recommended as the fabric isn’t as wide as the pattern recommends. I LOVE the combination of the Peplum Top shape with the Cozy Reading fabric. It breathes beautifully, is a cute, loose summery top and paired with this print, I instantly feel trendier when I wear it. It is being worn on high rotation at the moment!

Why not grab some fabric now ready for those slow days in the Summer holidays.
